School volunteer raises funds for lifesaving medication
Congratulations to our first Community Hero – Mr. Shitlhangu Mkateko who went above and beyond the call of duty to touch the lives of others.
On a visit to Shingwedzi Secondary School as a volunteer, Mr. Shitlhangu Mkateko identified a learner who looked poorly. His good caring heart led him to take action. The young girl had been struggling with undiagnosed illness and pain since 2020. Mr. Shitlhangu Mkateko immediately started fundraising and achieved more than R5000 in donations in less than two days! He used the funds to take the ailing girl to two different doctors who diagnosed her with a heart problem. Sir Mkateko did not stop there, he went on to raise funds to pay for life saving medication, a specialist doctor, and hospitalization.
“I choose him as my community hero because he is young, hard worker, caring and loves to see people happy. He deserves to be our hero and celebrated for the good work he has done which was not his duty, but he was able to take money from his pocket, travel to different doctors and gave our school mate another hope.” says his nominator.
At the time of publishing this story, it was reported that the girl’s health has been gradually improving. The P&L Hardware Helping Hearts Team hope that each day brings her closer to a full and speedy recovery.
We were honoured to award Mr. Shitlhangu Mkateko with a R1000 INSTORE VOUCHER plus a Helping Hearts Community Hero Certificate in acknowledgement of his commitment to the service of others. Thank you for striving to BUILD A BETTER LIFE for your community and for South Africa!
