Plenty of renovations in store for Ziyabuya schools
Mzimhlophe Public, Emsengeni and Emafini Primary are just three of the eight schools within the Ziyabuya area that were selected as the lucky winners of the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition. The schools each received a Cashbuild building materials voucher worth R12 000 when the Cashbuild Ziyabuya store opened its doors on 22 July 2011. The three schools plan to do some badly needed renovations over the next few months.
“Now we are finally able to paint and fix the floors of the classrooms where we teach our 973 learners. We are so thrilled to have won this voucher, it makes the learners’ environment so much more pleasant,” said Ntombi Hini, Principal of Mzimhlophe Public Primary School.
Ntombizandile Nocanda, Principal of Emsengeni Primary School said: “We will buy paint and various tools to repair the broken items within the school. We also want to replace the floor tiles and door handles in our classrooms, as they are in a terrible state.”
“Our office block is the face of the school and, for 22 years, we have not renovated it so it looks very dilapidated now. We plan to repair the floors and ceiling, as well as paint the outside of the building,” said Mzukisi January, a very excited Principal of Emafini Primary School. “We really are thankful to Cashbuild for helping the community in the Ziyabuya area; it really makes a huge difference.”
At the official Cashbuild store opening on 22 July, when the building material vouchers totaling R96 000 were presented to all eight schools, the children showed their appreciation by entertaining everyone with singing, cultural dances and theatrical performances.
The Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition entails learners from each school submitting their best artwork to Cashbuild. This artwork is displayed at the Ziyabuya ceremony, and then remains on display in the Cashbuild store for the next five years.
Artwork was judged and three winners from each school were named. The winning children received Cashbuild Art-at-Heart gold, silver and bronze certificates for first, second and third place respectively. The Manager’s Choice award was also presented to the lucky winner of the artwork competition. This award was announced on the day – Asanda Frans from Emsengeni Primary School received a stationery pack and a glass trophy.
At the store opening event, Sithembile Junior Primary School was the winner of the lucky draw and walked away with a solar geyser and free installation. This prize will ensure that they have hot water regardless of the lack of resources within their community.

Since the Art-at-Heart campaign was launched ten years ago, Cashbuild has helped more than a thousand schools with over R10-million worth of building materials. Cashbuild is BEE compliant and every time a store is opened, relocated or refurbished, Cashbuild not only makes donations to local schools, but also creates jobs for community members.
The Art-at-Heart competition is a southern African Cashbuild initiative whereby donations are made to some of the region's most needy schools.
