Welkom gets R72 000 from Cashbuild's Art-at-Heart

Thabong Primary School entered the Cashbuild Art at Heart competition and is one of the six lucky schools in the Welkom area to receive a Cashbuild building material voucher to the value of R12 000. Thabong Primary School’s infrastructure has become progressively more rundown in recent years, but with Cashbuild’s help, the school will now be able to make some positive changes. Several classrooms with broken floors and ceilings that have fallen in have made the environment unpleasant for many of the 668 learners in attendance at the school. Cashbuild’s generous contribution will now enable the school to attend to such issues. It will also allow them to replace the doors on five classrooms and repaint the roof of their admin block.

Thabong Primary School Principle, Mrs Veronica Dhlamini explained: “The school has become very dilapidated in the past few years; that’s why the learners, educators and community at large are so excited to have won the voucher from Cashbuild. Thank you so much Cashbuild. Now we can make our school look brand new again!”

The total donation of building materials to the value of R72 000 was presented to the six schools at the Cashbuild Welkom store opening ceremony on 13 August 2010. At the opening, the school children showed their appreciation by entertaining everyone with singing, cultural dances and theatrical performances.

Learners from each school submitted their best artwork to Cashbuild. The artwork was displayed at the Welkom store opening ceremony and will remain on display for the next five years.

The best artwork from each school was judged and three winners from each school were named. Winners received Cashbuild Art-at-Heart gold, silver and bronze certificates for first, second and third place respectively. The Manager’s Choice award was also presented to the lucky winner of the artwork competition. This award was announced on the day – Phoris Stephan from Thabong Primary School received a R500 stationery voucher and a glass trophy.

At the store opening event there was a lucky draw and one school walked away with a solar geyser and free installation. This prize will ensure that the winning school has hot water regardless of the lack of resources within their community.

Since the Art-at-Heart campaign was launched in 2001, Cashbuild has helped more than 1000 schools with over R10-million worth of building materials.  Cashbuild is BEE compliant and every time a store is opened, relocated or refurbished, Cashbuild not only makes donations to local schools, but also creates jobs for community members.

The Art-at-Heart competition is a national Cashbuild initiative whereby donations are made to some of the country’s most needy schools.
