New Science Lab is a Dream
for Highlands Primary

Learners at Highlands Primary JS School are thrilled to hear that their dream of having a science laboratory will soon come true.
Until now, the school’s Grade 8 and 9 science teachers had found it hard to give practical demonstrations of what they teach in theory and this has hampered learning; the teachers had been particularly concerned about how the learners would cope in Grades 10, 11
and 12.
Their worries are over now though because, having entered the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition, Highlands Primary received a R12 000 voucher for building materials. Highlands Primary was one of eight lucky Umzimkulu schools that each received a Cashbuild voucher to help carry out essential infrastructure improvement on their school facilities.
Principal of Highlands Primary JS School, Wellington Doko says: “We are a rural community and we struggle to build the facilities we need at the school. This new science lab will make a world of difference.”
The total donation of building materials to the value of R96 000 was presented to the eight schools at the Cashbuild Umzimkulu store opening ceremony on 19 November 2010. At the opening, the school children showed their appreciation by entertaining everyone with singing, cultural dances and theatrical performances.
The Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition entails learners from each school submitting their best artwork to Cashbuild. This artwork was displayed at the Umzimkulu opening ceremony, and will remain on display at the Cashbuild store for the next five years.
Artwork was judged and three winners from each school were named. The winning children received Cashbuild Art-at-Heart gold, silver and bronze certificates for first, second and third place respectively. The Manager’s Choice award was also presented to the lucky winner of the artwork competition. This award was announced on the day- Thamsanqa Bekwa from Senzakahle Primary School received a R500 stationery voucher and a glass trophy.
At the store opening event, there was a lucky draw, and one lucky school walked away with a solar geyser and free installation. This prize could ensure that the winning school has hot water regardless of the lack of resources within their community.
