Uitenhage gets R96 000 from Cashbuild's Art-at-Heart
A new jungle gym is soon to be built at Dower Primary School, and most of the building materials will be supplied for free by the Cashbuild Uitenhage Central store. The learners are ecstatic!
Dower primary school, along with another seven schools in Uitenhage have each won a Cashbuild building materials voucher for R12 000. The vouchers were presented to them at the Cashbuild store opening ceremony on 1 March 2011.
Mr. Mathinus Steyn, Principal of Dower Primary said: “We have wanted to build a jungle gym for a long time, simply because we understand the importance of how it helps young learners - especially the Grade R learners - in their physical development. Planks, metal bars, ropes and various other materials will be some of the items we will purchase to build the jungle gym. Being named as one of the winners of the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition has been a real blessing.”
Principal of Innes Primary, Mr. Leslie Stander said: “Our school is over one hundred years old, so it requires a lot of maintenance. There are tiles that need to be replaced, cracks that must be filled, painting to be done and toilets that need to be fixed. We usually raise funds for the restoration of our school through events such as ‘sokkiejols’ and bake sales, so this voucher will be a great help. Thank you so much Cashbuild!”
At the official Cashbuild store opening on 1 March, when the vouchers totaling R96 000 were presented to all eight schools, the children showed their appreciation by entertaining everyone with singing, cultural dances and theatrical performances.
The Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition entails learners from each school submitting their best artwork to Cashbuild. This artwork was displayed at the Uitenhage opening ceremony, and will remain on display in the Cashbuild store for the next five years.
Artwork was judged and three winners from each school were named. The winning children received Cashbuild Art-at-Heart gold, silver and bronze certificates for first, second and third place respectively. The Manager’s Choice award was also presented to the lucky winner of the artwork competition. This award was announced on the day - Orlando Zenzu from Winterberg Primary received a stationery voucher and a glass trophy.
At the store opening event, Innes Primary School was the winner of the lucky draw and walked away with a solar geyser and free installation. This prize will ensure that they have hot water regardless of the lack of resources within their community.
