Since the Art-at-Heart campaign was launched 16 years ago, Cashbuild has helped more than 2200 schools in Southern Africa with over R26-million worth of building materials.

New kitchen, garden and netball courts for several schools in Protea Gardens

The teachers and learners from schools in Protea Gardens in Soweto were ecstatic when they were told they were winners in the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition. Hitekani, Moriting, Tiakeni and Mveledzandivho primary, along with four other schools in Protea Gardens were selected as the lucky winners and received a Cashbuild building materials voucher worth R12 000 when the Cashbuild Protea Gardens store opened its doors on 28 July 2011. The vouchers will help all the schools improve their school facilities.

“Our learners have to practice on neighbouring schools’ netball courts and it is quite inconvenient,” said Lisbeth Hlungwani, Head of Department at Hitekani Primary School. “With the help of the learners and wonderful community, we have raised sufficient funds thus far in order to build the one section of the court, but thanks to the voucher we have won from Cashbuild, we can now do the finishing touches and have a complete netball court!”

“When we heard we had won, we couldn’t believe how blessed we were, because now we can improve our vegetable garden, and both repair and replace the leaking toilets in our bathrooms”, said a very excited Sello Ramoshaba, HOD of Moriting Primary School. “Our vegetable garden is in a terrible state, so we want to buy rakes, shovels, scissors and all the necessary garden tools to improve the soil. Once it’s improved we will be able to add more vegetables and thus, feed more learners, thank you Cashbuild!”

Annah Khoza, Principal of Tiakeni Primary added: “The teachers, learners and parents can’t wait for us to start all of the improvements on our school. We are going to add sinks and proper equipment to our kitchen, as well as buy garden tools to assist in planting more cabbages, onions and carrots. We also want to paint the toilets and do overall renovations to our school building. We are truly appreciative of this voucher, Cashbuild!”

Principal Siminya Takalani of Mveledzandivho Primary stated: “We plan buying a lot of cement and bricks, to pave the area around our four new mobile classrooms. We can’t wait to start the process!” At the official Cashbuild store opening ceremony on 28 July, when the building material vouchers totaling R96 000, were presented to all eight schools, the children showed their appreciation by entertaining everyone with singing, cultural dances and theatrical performances.

The Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition entails learners from each school submitting their best artwork to Cashbuild. This artwork is displayed at the Protea Gardens ceremony, and then remains on display in the Cashbuild store for the next five years. Artwork was judged and three winners from each school were named. The winning children received Cashbuild Art-at-Heart gold, silver and bronze certificates for first, second and third place respectively. The Manager’s Choice award was also presented to the lucky winner of the artwork competition. This award was announced on the day - Kamohelo Mohopi from Khuthala Primary School received a stationery pack and a glass trophy.

At the store opening event, Tiakeni Primary School was the winner of the lucky draw and walked away with a solar geyser and free installation. This prize will ensure that they have hot water regardless of the lack of resources within their community.
