Oudtshoorn School’s Sports Facilities
will run properly

The Van Reede Laerskool in Oudtshoorn has become a sports destination in the area – hosting tournaments and sports union trials – but the school’s sports facilities has seen better days.
The school’s dirty walls and broken windows, toilets, and cupboards will soon be a thing of the past as the school recently won R12 000 worth of building materials courtesy of Cashbuild. Van Reede Laerskool was one of eight schools in Oudtshoorn that received R12 000 worth of building material after entering the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition.
Van Reede takes sporting activities very seriously. The school will soon have proper facilities that will allow them to welcome other schools without unnecessary embarrassment about less than adequate facilities. They plan to paint the sports house, fix the toilets and repair the broken cupboard doors.
Mnr Ferdi Maritz, Principal of Van Reede Laerskool said: “The school also presents the annual Western Cape hockey tournament for under 13s when the
y host provincial teams from Eastern Cape, Boland and Western Province. The Southern Cape sports unions also make use of the school’s sport facility for its trials.”
The total donation of building material to the value of R96 000 were presented by Cashbuild to the eight schools at the Oudtshoorn store opening ceremony on 22 October 2010.
At the opening, the school children showed their appreciation by entertaining everyone with cultural dances, theatrical performances and traditional singing.
Learners from each school submitted their best artwork to Cashbuild. The artwork was displayed at the Oudtshoorn opening ceremony, and will remain on display for the next five years.
Artwork was judged and three winners from each school were named. The winning children received Cashbuild Art-at-Heart gold, silver and bronze certificates for first, second and third place respectively.
The Manager’s Choice award was also presented to the lucky winner of the artwork competition. This award was announced on the day – M C Davel from Laerskool Oudtshoorn Noord received a R500 stationery voucher and a glass trophy.
At the store opening event there was a lucky draw and one lucky school walked away with a solar geyser and free installation. This prize could ensure that the winning school has hot water regardless of the lack of resources within their community.
