A facelift for Nyanga schools
Zanemfundo Primary will build extra classrooms, Naluxolo Primary plans to build a shelter and Bongolethu Primary is putting up a new fence. This is all thanks to the schools’ entry into the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition.
Naluxolo Primary, Bongolethu Primary and Zanemfundo Primary are three of the twelve winning schools in Nyanga that received a Cashbuild building materials voucher worth R12 000 when the Cashbuild Nyanga store officially opened its doors on 21 October 2011.
Malusi Dyantyi, an excited teacher at Zanemfundo Primary said: “We plan to build three extra classrooms for the school; we can’t wait to start the project.”
Principal Nokuzola Gqeba from Naluxolo Primary added: “Our learners often suffer from heat stroke and sunburn during the summer season and that’s why we plan to build a shelter with the voucher, so that the learners have a protected surface to play and eat under.”
“Vandalism is a common problem in our area”, explained Principal Mlindazwe Harbert from Bongolethu Primary: “Many times children jump over the fence and shoot the pigeons in our school garden, causing damage to our property. That’s why we want to put up a fence around the school to prevent these naughty kids from entering the school. We also plan to repaint some of the classroom walls and buy power tools to do general maintenance around the school.”
At the official Cashbuild store opening ceremony on 21 October, when the building material vouchers totaling R144 000 were presented to all twelve schools, the children showed their appreciation by entertaining everyone with singing, cultural dances and theatrical performances.
The Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition entails learners from each school submitting their best artwork to Cashbuild. This artwork is displayed at the Nyanga ceremony, and then remains on display in the Cashbuild store for the next five years.
Artwork was judged and three winners from each school were named. The winning children received Cashbuild Art-at-Heart gold, silver and bronze certificates for first, second and third place respectively. The Manager’s Choice award was also presented to the lucky winner of the artwork competition. This award was announced on the day – Nceba Mgabashe from John Pama Primary School received a stationery pack and a glass trophy.

Since the Art-at-Heart campaign was launched ten years ago, Cashbuild has helped more than 1 200 schools with over R12-million worth of building materials.
Cashbuild is BEE compliant and every time a store is opened, relocated or refurbished, Cashbuild not only makes donations to local schools, but also creates jobs for community members.
The Art-at-Heart competition is a southern African Cashbuild initiative whereby donations are made to some of the region's most needy schools.
