Renovations, a shelter and more for Mitchell's Plain schools
Two primary schools in Mitchell's Plain, Cornflower and Lantana Primary, plan to build carports as a shelter for the learners who participate in the schools’ feeding schemes. Another school, Alpine Primary, wants to build a stage in their courtyard and renovate the school bathrooms. All these structural additions are able to take place due to the schools’ entries into the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition.
Cornflower, Lantana and Alpine Primary, along with six other schools in the Mitchell’s Plain area, were selected as the lucky winners of the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition. The schools received a Cashbuild building materials voucher worth R12 000 when the Cashbuild Mitchell’s Plain store opened its doors on 21 July 2011 at the opening ceremony.
Mogamad Labeeb Gasant, the Principal of Lantana Primary, can’t wait to start their building project. “We want to build a carport for the 250 learners who partake in our feeding scheme. This idea came about when we realised that because there is no covering, they were often exposed to the harsh elements of winter and summer, and this led to all sorts of illnesses. We believe a carport will serve as a great shelter for these learners. Thank you Cashbuild for being the bearer of good news!”
“We plan to purchase sufficient building materials and various resources in order to build a stage in our courtyard,” said Mogammad Ashraff Patel, Deputy Principal of Alpine Primary. “There are often assemblies, special activities and events such as modeling competitions and fundraisers in the courtyard. When making announcements, the learners struggle to see us and this makes it difficult to get our messages across. That’s why we want a stage to be built. With the help of this voucher, many renovations will take place within our school, such as replacing toilets and tiling in the bathrooms. We are so grateful to Cashbuild for helping us to improve our school.”
At the official Cashbuild store opening on 21 July, when the vouchers totaling R108 000 were presented to all nine schools, the children showed their appreciation by entertaining everyone with singing, cultural dances and theatrical performances.
The Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition entails learners from each school submitting their best artwork to Cashbuild. This artwork is displayed at the Mitchell's Plain ceremony, and then remains on display in the Cashbuild store for the next five years.
Artwork was judged and three winners from each school were named. The winning children received Cashbuild Art-at-Heart gold, silver and bronze certificates for first, second and third place respectively. The Manager’s Choice award was also presented to the lucky winner of the artwork competition. This award was announced on the day - Trevor Alexander from Merrydale Primary received a stationery pack and a glass trophy.
At the store opening event, A Z Berman Primary School was the winner of the lucky draw and walked away with a solar geyser and free installation. This prize will ensure that they have hot water regardless of the lack of resources within their community.

Since the Art-at-Heart campaign was launched ten years ago, Cashbuild has helped more than a thousand schools with over R10-million worth of building materials. Cashbuild is BEE compliant and every time a store is opened, relocated or refurbished, Cashbuild not only makes donations to local schools, but also creates jobs for community members.
The Art-at-Heart competition is a southern African Cashbuild initiative whereby donations are made to some of the region's most needy schools.
