Klerksdorp gets R80 000 from Cashbuild's Art-at-Heart
Mr Nkoe, principal of Mokolokotoane Primary School, is helping learners to become more literate by building a library for the school in order to give the children access to books. He believes reading is the foundation of any child’s education. The reason he can build the library is because the school entered the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition and was one of eight schools in Klerksdorp that each won R10 000 worth of Cashbuild building materials to improve their school’s infrastructure and facilities.
“We are an extremely disadvantaged school, which will be declared a no-fee school next year because our learners’ parents are mostly unemployed,” says Mr Nkoe, “We will now build a library for the children with our donation to encourage children to read – it is so important for them to read before and after school”.
A total of R80 000 was donated to the eight winning schools, who each received R10 000 worth of Cashbuild building materials at the official Klerksdorp Cashbuild store opening on 28 November 2008.
Children from each of the schools submitted their best artwork to Cashbuild, which was on display at the Klerksdorp store opening, and, more importantly, will be in the Klerksdorp store for the next five years.
The best artwork from the eight schools was judged and each school had three winners who received Cashbuild Art-at-Heart gold, silver and bronze certificates. The manager’s choice award, which is the lucky overall winner of the artwork competition, was Katlego Bengele from Alabama Primary School. Katlego received a stationery voucher and a glass trophy.
The schools that benefited from the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart donations and the gold, silver and bronze artwork winners are:

Since the Art-at-Heart campaign was launched in 2001, Cashbuild has helped more than 870 schools with over 9 million rands worth of building materials. Cashbuild is BEE compliant, and every time a store is opened, relocated or refurbished, Cashbuild not only makes donations to local schools, but also creates jobs for community members.
The Art-at-Heart competition is a national Cashbuild initiative whereby donations are made to some of the country’s most needy schools.
