Since the Art-at-Heart campaign was launched 16 years ago, Cashbuild has helped more than 2200 schools in Southern Africa with over R26-million worth of building materials.

Springs schools are transformed

Schools in the Springs area have big plans for how they will use their winnings from the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition. From feeding scheme kitchens to newly painted classrooms, Selection Park, Welgedagt, Christiaan Beyers Laerskool and five other Springs schools will soon realise their dreams for improving their schools. On 16 May, each of the schools received a Cashbuild building materials voucher to the value of R12 000 when the Cashbuild Springs Store officially opened.

Principal Du Plessis from Selection Park Primary School said: “We would like to build a lunch area for our learners next to the main rugby field and also to paint the classrooms.”

Welgedagt Primary School’s Principal Rene Theron said: “We plan to build a porch in front of the classrooms because learners get wet when lining up before going into the classroom. We also want to build a feeding scheme kitchen with a storage and lunch area.”

Principal MJ Roberts from Christiaan Beyers Laerskool said: “We are so happy that our learners have won the competition. The school is 76 years old and needs constant maintenance. We aim to replace the old and worn toilets with new toilets.”

At the official Cashbuild Springs store opening ceremony on 16 May, when the building material vouchers totaling R96 000 were presented to all eight schools, the children entertained everyone with singing, cultural dances and theatrical performances.

The Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition entails learners from each school submitting their best artwork to Cashbuild. This artwork is displayed at the ceremony, and then remains on display in the Cashbuild store for the next five years.

Artwork was judged and three winners from each school were named. Winners received Cashbuild Art-at-Heart gold, silver and bronze certificates for first, second and third place respectively. The Manager’s Choice award was also presented to the lucky winner, Nicole Ngcamu from Werda Primary School for the artwork competition. This award was announced on the day and the winner received a stationery pack and a glass trophy.

The Art-at-Heart competition is a Southern African Cashbuild initiative whereby donations are made to some of the region’s most needy schools.
