Creative learners give Cosmo City schools a fresh start

Delayed Cosmo City school projects will now be completed thanks to the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition. Masakhane Primary School and Zandspruit Primary School are two of the eight schools that each won Cashbuild building material vouchers to the value of R12 000 on 11 April 2014 at the Cashbuild Cosmo City Store Opening Ceremony.

Masakhane Primary School Principal LA Lebethe said: “We are using an old farmer’s container garage as a school premises. The school has 24 small classrooms, 25 teachers and 960 learners. We would like to use our Cashbuild voucher to tile the passage, build a tuck shop and conduct general maintenance at the school.”

Zandspruit Primary School Principal VE Mmuoe said: “We would like to repair the plumbing, pave the assembly area as well as build a shelter over the area.”

At the official Cashbuild Cosmo City store opening ceremony on 11 April, when the building material vouchers totaling R96 000 were presented to all eight schools, the children entertained everyone with singing, cultural dances and theatrical performances.

The Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition entails learners from each school submitting their best artwork to Cashbuild. This artwork is displayed at the ceremony, and then remains on display in the Cashbuild store for the next five years.

Artwork was judged and three winners from each school were named. Winners received Cashbuild Art-at-Heart gold, silver and bronze certificates for first, second and third place respectively. The Manager’s Choice award was also presented to the overall winner, Allen Machete from Masakhane Primary School for the artwork competition. This award was announced on the day and the winner received a stationery pack and a glass trophy.
